As a part of the City of Paris "Night Talks" program
Paris : an "open city", a refuge zone, a territory of artistic exchanges ; it is also the stage of frictions, of conflicts, even of evictions. A place where decisions are taken that affect the circulation and presence of travelling and migrating bodies on a much larger scale. Paris where since the beginning of the 20th century artists and intellectuals from all around the globe gather, willingly or not, fleeing for some the rise of Nazism, for others the spanish civil war, or closer to us, the syrian conflict. Taking as a starting point some of the paths weaving through the exhibition Groupe Mobile at Villa Vassilieff and a short selection of texts, this evening’s discussion invites to draw the complexity of the circulations that constitutes Paris’ intellectual, artistic, social and political space, between hospitality and rejection. Together, we will wonder how those multiple narratives can nurture the way we look at present times, reflect on them and act upon them.
In association with the Global South(s) professorship at Collège d’études mondiales, FMSH.
